Patagonia Provisions
Are you associated with Patagonia the clothing retail store?
Yes! We are a division of Patagonia, Inc. the outdoor clothing company. Patagonia was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973 and the Patagonia Provisions division was created to in 2012. It is operated from one of our remote offices in Sausalito, CA.
How long have you been making food?
The Patagonia Provisions division was created in 2012 by Yvon Chouinard. Our first product was a salmon product only sold in our retail stores in 2013. From that time until now we have grown a lot! We now produce 30+ products and distribute through other great outdoor retailers and natural grocers.
Why are you making food?
In short, our food chain is broken. Today, modern technology, chemistry and transportation combine to put more distance between people and their food than ever before. We harvest salmon indiscriminately or farm them in open-water feedlots, putting wild salmon in peril. We overgraze our prairies, fill our livestock with antibiotics, and drain fossil aquifers to water unsustainable crops. Chemicals reign supreme to maximize production, and the unknown impact of genetically modified organisms hovers over the entire industry. Patagonia Provisions is about finding solutions to repair the food chain.

Regenerative Organic Certified™ (ROC™)
What is Regenerative Organic Certified™?
ROC is an agricultural certification for food, fiber and botanicals. Based on three pillars, it requires farmers to use practices that ensure healthy soil, the ethical and humane treatment of animals, and fairness for farmers and workers. It was created to address the climate crisis, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, factory farming and fractured rural economies globally.
ROC™ has three levels: ROC Bronze, ROC Silver and ROC Gold. Each requires a different number and scope of regenerative and organic practices used. Farms are required to improve through the different levels over the years in order to maintain certification. (Learn more.)
How is Regenerative Organic Certified™ different from USDA Certified Organic?
USDA Certified Organic is an excellent standard and is the baseline for Regenerative Organic Certified™, which adds even more rigorous criteria for soil health, animal welfare and farm labor that are not included in or enforced by the National Organic Program(NOP). ROC is not intended to replace USDA Certified Organic or other labels, but to support them.
Marketplace
What is the Regenerative Marketplace?
Our Regenerative Marketplace is a collection of products from like-minded food producers who share our vision for raising the bar. We are excited to offer a growing selection of foods that address environmental, social and animal welfare issues in our food system. These products were produced using practices that go beyond industry standards and that are moving us forward towards a healthier, more just home planet.
How do you choose what goods go on your Marketplace?
These items were selected because of the commitment of their producers to go beyond the industry standard, and offer products that go the extra mile for the planet. In some cases, this means using farming practices that enrich rather than degrade soil, adding regenerative practices to organic systems. Many of them are certified fair trade, ensuring that workers were treated fairly.
Packaging
Seafood cans or pouches lined with BPA?
The cans for our mussels, mackerel & anchovies are manufactured without Bisphenol A (BPA), BPF, BPS, BPDm and BPAF.
Is packaging recyclable or compostable?
The short answer is that most of our packaging is not recyclable or compostable. The exception to that is our corrugated and paperboard packaging (cartons and case boxes) which are recyclable and made from 100% post-consumer recycled content. Our seafood cans are fully recyclable as well. As you may well know, food packaging is a huge challenge for the industry. Patagonia Provisions’ primary focus around packaging is on food safety and quality, so those requirements must come first. Just like the work we put into sustainable supply chains, we take packaging very seriously and are at the forefront of trying to figure out better methods, which takes time.

Shelf life
The shelf life of our products varies greatly depending on the type of product, and type of packaging it comes in. We also do not put chemical preservatives on any of our products, which can result in a shorter shelf life than similar products on the market.
The following are rough windows of time you can expect with our products.
• 2 - 4 years: Salmon, Mackerel, Mussels
• 3 - 12 months : All other products
Occasionally we will send our soups and grains with shorter shelf lives, but never less than 3 months. If you ever receive soups or grains with too little time to enjoy before their Best By Date, please feel free to reach out to us and we will replace the product with fresher product, or refund you.
Why is there a “California Proposition 65” warning on tins of Patagonia Provisions’ Lemon Herb, Savory Sofrito and Smoked Mussels?
Under California’s Proposition 65 (P65), lead is listed as a chemical known to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. The P65 level for lead is among the most stringent in the world and much lower than the level required by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. In fact, it is set at 1,000 times below the level that is known to cause no adverse effect. Because lead and other heavy metals are present in the ocean environment, Patagonia Provisions tests its mussels for their presence. In many if not most cases these levels for lead are below those that require a warning under P65, but in some instances there can be doubt. As a result, in order to ensure compliance with California Proposition 65, Patagonia Provisions provides a warning on its mussels.
