Kernza Pilsner Patagonia Provisions
Why Kernza®?
Draws Down Carbon • Protects Against Erosion • Builds Healthy Topsoil
We’ve teamed up with our friends at Dogfish Head brewery to make a crisp, refreshing German-style pilsner with a revolutionary new grain called Kernza. This perennial plant, developed at The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas, is an ideal crop for regenerative agriculture. A cousin of wheat, it has a massive root system that restores soil and draws planet-warming carbon underground. Every sip you take helps us plant more Kernza, fight the climate crisis and brew more delicious beer.
Cheers!

Product Details + Sourcing
Sourcing:
- Kernza® Pils is brewed at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware.
- This classic pilsner uses organic pilsner malt, organic Contessa hops and Kernza® perennial grain. The hops give the beer its bright, floral character and the Kernza lends a subtle spiciness.
- Kernza, a distant relative of wheat, was developed by plant breeders at The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas. This revolutionary new crop could change the way we grow grains.
- Most food crops are annuals and require tilling, which releases atmosphere-warming carbon. As a deeply rooted perennial, Kernza stays in place year-round, drawing carbon underground.
- Kernza’s massive roots hold topsoil in place, preventing erosion. The roots also host trillions of beneficial microbes, which build soil health.
- The Kernza for our pilsner is grown using organic practices in the American Midwest.
- With Kernza (which we use for pasta, too), we’re supporting farming that regenerates the earth rather than depleting it.
