Our Kernza® Lager

Light, crisp and easy to drink, our Patagonia Provisions Kernza® Lager uses organic barley and hops—still rare in the beer world. Our lager is also brewed with organic, regeneratively-grown Kernza, a soil-saving, low-to-no till grain.

We’re teaming up with some of our favorite craft breweries to brew this delicious, unique beer across the country.

Why Beer?

Well, for starters, we really love good beer. And beer is, after all, an agricultural product.

But the barley and hops used for most beer still come from conventional industrial farms, which use toxic synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Protecting the earth, and our future on it, means we have to find a better way.

That’s why we’re working with like-minded breweries across the country to create beers using organic and regenerative ingredients. Patagonia Provisions Kernza Lager is our first collaboration, with each brewery creating its own distinctive recipe.

You can find these wildly drinkable beers at our partners’ taprooms. Cheers to our home planet!

What is Kernza®?

Kernza is a wheatlike perennial grain with a nutty flavor and a hint of sweet spices. Its massive root system penetrates up to 12 feet into the earth, at least twice the depth of conventional wheat. These remarkable roots build soil health and volume; they also draw down and store more carbon than annual grains typically used in beer. Also, because it’s a perennial, Kernza stays rooted in place for several years, minimizing machine tilling and replanting—which means less fossil-fuel–intensive equipment.

Not only does this grain make great beer—it’s also helping spark a global movement to fight the environmental crisis through agriculture.

That’s a Wrap

Together with suppliers like CanWorks, our brewery partners are reducing the demand for plastic-shrink-wrapped and difficult-to-recycle labeled cans.
